August 20th & 21st we’ll be holding the Safety Instrumented Burner Management Systems Training Course taught by Usman Kahn. Fired equipment is found throughout the process industry in many applications, including various types of boilers, ovens, kilns, incinerators, reboilers, bath heaters, process heaters, furnaces, etc. The hazards associated with the burner operation are managed by an instrumented system commonly referred to as the burner management system (BMS). The BMS provides interlocks and permissives to prevent misoperation of equipment and to safely handle faults caused by equipment failure. These events potentially result in uncontrolled fires, explosions, or implosions and in the unintended release of the materials being heated. This course shall provide a thorough overview of the BMS unit operation, as well as, the associated combustion control techniques typically used to maintain a safe firing rate with emphasis on understanding associated hazards and design requirements to mitigate these hazards.  More info on this course can be found here. Also being offered is the ISA course Safety Instrumented Systems: A Life-Cycle Approach (ISA EC50) being taught by the 2019 ISA President, Paul Gruhn.  Beginning August 26th, this is a four day course focuses on the engineering requirements for the specification, design, analysis, and justification of safety instrumented systems for the process industries. Students will learn how to determine safety integrity levels and evaluate whether proposed or existing systems meet the performance and documentation requirements defined in the ISA 84 (IEC61511) standard.

This course is required for the ISA84 Safety Instrumented Systems Certificate Programs. When you register for the course, the certificate exam is included with your registration.  Those who successfully complete this course and pass the exam receive the designation of ISA84 SIS Fundamentals Specialist. About the Instructors:

Usman Khan, PE, TUV FSEng – Usman Khan is a Professional Engineer in multiple North American jurisdictions with over 19 years of experience in instrumentation controls and process safety in the oil and gas, and chemical industries. His technical expertise and experience encompass both multi-discipline engineering, as well as, operations of oil and gas assets. Usman’s work passion is centered on safety in design, specifically with fired equipment. Usman was most recently the I&C and Process Safety Technical Authority for an operating oil and gas company where he managed the full design lifecycle of a multi-billion greenfield project and set company technical standards in addition to his regular day job of supporting existing producing assets. With his 360-degree experience working for instrumentation and control OEMs, EPCs and oil and gas companies in a wide variety of roles in project management and operations, Usman brings a unique perspective to the table. He currently serves in an engineering leadership role, managing a group of engineers and safety professionals for aeSolutions’ Houston office.


2019 ISA President, PE, CFSE,and ISA Life Fellow  – Gruhn is a Global Functional Safety Consultant with aeSolutions, a process safety, cybersecurity and automation consulting firm. He serves as a Co-Chair and long-time member of the ISA 84 standard committee (on safety instrumented systems), and continues to develop and teach ISA courses on safety systems. He also developed the first commercial safety system modeling program. Gruhn has written two ISA textbooks, numerous chapters in other books and dozens of published articles.
