Alaska ISA March Meeting: Designing SIS to Avoid Nuisance Trips

Presenter: Mike Scott, PE, CFSE
Date: Thursday, March 20, 2008
Location: Anchorage

Description

This presentation will highlight a systematic methodology for selecting an optimum Safety Instrumented Function architecture. It will describe how to evaluate and compare several different Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) architectures based upon both technical requirements (i.e. safety requirements) and commercial requirements (i.e. availability and Life Cycle Cost analysis). The end result allows one to select a design that meets the required Safety Integrity Level target while maximizing system available through reduction in nuisance trips. One can design a SIF to meet SIL 3 but this design might result in nuisance trips on a monthly basis. Thus, if one is not carefully considering both the safety requirements as well as production requirements regarding cost of ownership of a given SIF, then final design may not be satisfactory to operations.
