Alaska ISA February Meeting: S84 Applied to Burner Management Systems

Presenter: Mike Scott, PE, CFSE
Date: Thursday, February 21, 2008
Location: Anchorage

Description

This presentation will explore the current trends in the marketplace with respect to Burner Management Systems and their relationship to Safety Instrumented Systems. The concept of a Safety Instrumented Burner Management System (BMS) will be introduced and explained in detail. The presentation will include a review of the current Draft Technical Report being developed by the ISA S84 committee with regard to BMS designs. The purpose of ISA-TR84.00.05 (TR) is to provide guidance to owner/operators and manufacturers of BMS on how to determine when a function in the BMS is a Safety Instrumented Function (SIF). It demonstrates how the principles of ISA-84.01-2004 can be applied to establish the performance requirements for identified BMS functions, BMS functions that are identified as SIFs should be implemented according to the requirements of ISA-84.01-2004 in addition to relevant application specific practices, such as NFPA 85, NFPA 86, API 556, and API RP 14C. Included are unit operation examples such as Single Burner Boiler, Thermal Oxidizer, Multiple Burner Process Heater, Glycol Reboiler, and Oil Heater Treater.
