AE Solutions Vice-President Mike Scott will be presenting at the Safety Symposium sponsored by the Safety Division of the Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society (ISA). The paper and presentation is entitled:
Safety Instrumented System Requirements as Invoked in NFPA 86 – 2007 Edition
NFPA 86 – Standard for Ovens and Furnaces 2007 Edition has recently
undergone significant revisions with respect to logic solver requirements
associated with Burner Management Systems (BMS).
Also included in this edition are some field device changes that could
impact BMS designs. Of significant interest is the fact that NFPA 86 now
includes a linking paragraph to ANSI/ISA 84.00.01-2004.
This white paper shall highlight these new BMS requirements and specifically
address the five (5) types of acceptable logic solvers contained within NFPA 86.
Acceptable logic solvers include the following:
I. Hardwired Logic Systems
II. Safety Relays Listed for combustion safety service
III. Programmable logic controller-based system listed for combustion safety service.
IV. Programmable logic controller-based system NOT listed for combustion safety service
V. Logic solver designed per ANSI/ISA 84.00.01-2004
In addition application of performance based design criteria per ANSI/ISA 84.00.01-2004 to a BMS shall be discussed.
